Installing kernel development tools

The following tools will allow you to compile your system's kernel.

sudo apt-get install kernel-package ncurses-dev bzip2 module-init-tools initramfs-tools procps fakeroot

The matching documentations and man pages are installed with:

sudo apt-get install binutils-doc gcc-doc bzip2-doc glibc-doc make-doc 

Installing kernel sources

Check with:

uname -r

to see which particular version of Linux your system is running. E.g. for Debian 6.0/Squeeze:

sudo apt-get install linux-source-2.6 linux-doc-2.6 linux-manual-2.6.32
